Door configurations

Door type affects usable cabin area, accessibility, cost and the experience of every journey for the life of the installation.

Automatic doors are standard specification on modern passenger lifts. Manual swing doors remain available at lower cost, but require the user to operate the door physically, which is a material consideration in buildings with elderly residents or shared usage.

Automatic centre-opening doors

Standard specification for most passenger applications, offering the best balance of opening width and cabin usability.

Automatic telescopic doors

Maximise the clear opening within a constrained shaft width, frequently specified in retrofit projects.

Manual swing doors

The lowest-cost option, still found in older buildings. Not recommended where accessibility is a consideration.

Drive systems and energy efficiency

Gearless traction drives are the current standard for passenger applications. They operate more quietly, hold landing levels more precisely, consume less power and require less maintenance than older geared systems.

Machine-room-less configurations locate the drive within the shaft, removing the requirement for a separate plant room. This is frequently decisive in retrofit projects and in buildings where roof space is constrained.

Where the shaft exists and is structurally ready, installation and commissioning typically takes one to three weeks. Where the shaft must be constructed, the civil works generally determine the overall programme rather than the elevator itself.
